Summer Projects & Oma

With the kids being home 24/7 now, they can get on each others nerves...so projects are always good to keep them busy and out of each other's hair. :) James insisted I buy more Satay sticks (sticks I use for my Indonesian kabobs) because I ran out and he wanted to make a boat. Yes, I said a boat. Okay so after picking some up along with some glue, pasta, and paper....he was busy working on the kitchen floor for a couple of days working on some of his "boats". Not bad engineering by a 5 year old, I think he was tapping into his Asian heritage as his design much resembles one of those bamboo river rafts. :) 
He tested it out in the sink - it floats!

Madeline is holding her boat too, hers is made out of uncooked pasta. Madeline asked me if she could buy one of those foam core poster boards and a water color paint set from the dollar store. She also asked me if I could have photos printed of her at ages 0-8. This is what she made with her $3 project...a timeline poster of her! :) It's hard to see in this photo but she wrote a caption under each picture telling her age and what was going on in the photo.

Our next summer project...a hermit crab habitat. More on that in another post.

Lastly, today is Oma's (my mom's) birthday!!! I posted this "then and now" on my Facebook today to wish her a happy birthday. Pasting the comments I received below so my mom can read them, she's not on Facebook but she does read my blog. :) Happy Birthday mom, love you.

Happy Birthday to my beautiful mama today! My mom & I in Hawaii 1979 and at my wedding 2002. She is one of the most caring, nurturing, wonderful women I know. "As I count my blessings, I can't help but think of her. Thank you for the difference you have made in my life, dear Mom."

My Oma

My mom got a new photo slide scanner, so she has been on this kick on making digital files of all her old photo slides. She said she will have a memory stick full of them for me when we go out to Cali. She also scanned some old photos she wanted restored. I've taught my mom how to resize images in Photoshop. She called yesterday and said she had a couple of photos she needed my help on in touching up. She tried to use the tools in Photoshop but couldn't figure it out. This photograph is of my Oma, my mom's mom. It was taken some time in the 1930's when she was in her 20's. I think it's such a beautiful portrait of her.
I love Photoshop. Within an hour this was how much I was able to clean it up. CS5 has this cool "content-aware" tool when you marquee (highlight) a certain area, it fixes it like a magic wand. So cool! I still can see a few spots I'd like to fix. And then onto the other photos! :)

We say "Kyle" You say "Invaders"

My mom arrived on Friday to help us celebrate Stephen and James' birthdays this weekend  - I have lots of pics to share from over the weekend, I'll put them into several posts. She also got to see Madeline cheer at a football game.

A year later, my heart still aches


Today marks the 1 year anniversary of my dear, sweet Oma's passing. I got real emotional yesterday morning thinking about her. Oh how I miss her. Above is a photo that I love, with my Oma front and center looking so poised and beautiful. My Dad, the little boy with the hat, is walking next to her along with my Opa, Tante and a couple. Cafe Monet


Before my mom returned back home to California, Madeline and I took Oma out for a "girls afternoon". We went to Cafe Monet in Austin, it's a "paint your own pottery" and mosaic studio. I thought it would be fun to do some crafty projects with Madeline.

So we picked out some pieces that Madeline and James could give to Stephen for Father's Day. Here are Oma and Madeline painting away with their piece.

I really liked painting pottery. It was creative and fun! I wouldn't mind going back again. Although even though their website says they have pieces for $7 and up, most of the things you would want to paint were around the $20 price range. I guess that's not so bad since it includes unlimited paint, all the tools and templates, and the firing of the pieces.

We pick up our pieces this Saturday. Can't wait to see how they turned out! Madeline did an awesome job with hers, she was very meticulous as she painted. I know she has that creative touch!

On Tuesday we took Penny Lane to the vet to get her staples removed from getting spayed the week before. During her recovery days she developed a bulge near the incision. (Unfortunately Stephen exercising her too soon and playing fetch may have caused this) We took her to get checked and they said it was probably inflamed. Well when they removed the staples they discovered her spay line inside had herniated. :( The hernia was pretty good in size and it needs to be fixed because it could possibly strangulate her intestines.

I about fainted when they gave me the estimate cost for the hernia surgery...$908! And that's with a 10% discount because we are on a Banfield pet plan. We understand that with pets comes along extra expenses...but this was a huge expense. Luckily the Banfield vet said we could most likely take her to another vet in the area that could do it for a lot less. She gave me a list of places.

A vet in San Marcos said he could do the surgery for $90 plus costs for anesthesia, pain meds and antibiotics. What a relief! So I took Penny to be assessed by him last night. His next opening for surgery is next Wednesday so he bandaged Penny's belly up tight to keep things from protruding out of the hernia hole. He was a really nice vet. He's got an older facility - but he seems to know what he's doing because in the waiting room with us was a bird, a duck and another puppy. And when we were leaving he had a horse waiting outside to be seen!

Penny will need to be on strict bed rest after the surgery. That means even no playing or running inside the house. So we borrowed Bill and Jimmena's dog kennel cage to prevent Penny from moving around much. She's not very fond of it, but she'll need to rest and heal.

My coworker, Elise, lives on her parent's farm in Manor, Texas. She said they had tons of veggies coming up and asked if I ever wanted any. We use tomatoes, peppers and onions on a weekly basis to make salsa, so of course I said yes. She brought me a grocery bag full yesterday. She warned me though that the Serrano peppers were super hot! I said, great that's just how Stephen like them!

More...Oma's Visiting :)


Oma took this photo of Madeline and James getting a ride on Daddy's back.

Today we went to Joe's Crab Shack on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, it was a beautiful evening so we sat outside.

This evening we decided to play the Mexican Train Domino game. It was mom and Uncle Steve's first time playing. They got the hang of it!

After 5 rounds Stephen ended up being our winner. Better luck next time!

Oma's Visiting :)


My mom came to town so she can see Madeline big dance recital on Saturday. Here is Oma and Madeline at Maddy's dance recital dress rehersal last night.

Madeline did pretty well at rehersal, can't wait to see the real recital!

Here she is after a costume change in her ballet outfit.

We took the kids out to the courtyard in between routines. The recital is being held in an auditorium on Texas State University. It's a really pretty campus. Here the kids are playing on this giant horse statue.

After rehersal, tired and hungry, Madeline and James pose infront of the university's mascot, the Bobcat.

Oma does what she does best when she comes to visit - she spoils her grandkids. Madeline has still be riding her 12" bicycle which is way too small for her. So Oma (and Opa) bought her this new 18" bicycle as her "summer before she starts kindergarten" gift. Madeline is SUPER excited about her new bike.

Oh and Oma wanted to get James a new ball or something since Madeline was getting a bike. James played with the balls in the toy section among other stuff but he wasn't interested in bringing one home. Luckily James isn't one of those kids that has to have everything he sees in the toy store. So when we left Wal-mart James was happy to just get a 50 cent ride on the Bert and Ernie mobile.

And here is Daddy and Maddy playing the motorcycle ride game. We're having a fun visit with mom/oma and have a fun weekend planned!
